Abstract

This research applies Ecological Modernization Theory (EMT) together with the Resource-Based View (RBV) to investigate the influence of access to finance (AF) and sustainable innovative leadership (SIL) on firms’ sustainable performance. It further analyzes the mediating effect of FinTech adoption (FTA) and the conditional role of financial competencies (FC) as a moderated mediator within the context of Pakistani SMEs. Data were gathered from 350 SME executives and examined using Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The analysis reveals that both AF and SIL contribute positively to sustainable performance when facilitated through FTA. In addition, FC strengthens the indirect pathway, indicating that financial skills enhance the impact of AF and FTA on sustainable outcomes. The results highlight that AF, SIL, FTA, and FC serve as essential strategic resources that collectively drive environmental (ESP), social (SSP), and financial (FSP) sustainability within organizations. Overall, this study offers practical implications for SME leaders and policymakers by presenting a comprehensive framework that emphasizes FinTech implementation, improvement of governance systems, and the enhancement of financial expertise. Strengthening these areas can expand financial accessibility and support the design of effective training and regulatory strategies for SMEs.
