Abstract
This study examines the individual and combined effects of digitalization and inbound open innovation (OI) on technological innovation, specifically product and process innovation, among German firms. Digitalization is represented by the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics (BDA), while inbound OI is measured through the breadth of external knowledge search. The analysis utilizes data from the 2019 wave of the Mannheim Innovation Panel, covering the period 2016–2018, and applies econometric techniques to investigate these relationships across both manufacturing and service sectors. The findings reveal heterogeneous effects of digitalization on innovation outcomes. AI is found to positively influence product innovation, whereas BDA significantly increases the likelihood of process innovation. Furthermore, the results indicate that AI does not generate synergistic effects when combined with external knowledge search, while BDA appears to weaken the positive influence of search breadth on process innovation. These findings provide important theoretical, managerial, and policy insights regarding the role of digital technologies and open innovation practices in fostering innovation performance. This study contributes to the literature by offering a comprehensive perspective on how digitalization and inbound OI interact to shape technological innovation and by highlighting sectoral differences between manufacturing and service firms in Germany.
